About the event

Build a beautiful, functional serving platter from clay in this beginner-friendly handbuilding class. Learn step-by-step slab-building techniques to create a unique platter perfect for serving, entertaining, or simply displaying on your table. Choose your glaze colour at the end, and our studio will fire and glaze your piece, ready for pickup in 4-6 weeks. Shipping is available for out-of-town guests.


Class Overview

  • Duration: 2 hours

  • Location: Next of Kiln Studio

  • Materials Provided: Stoneware clay, tools, templates, and food-safe glaze (you choose the colour)

  • Firing: Included — bisque and glaze firing done by our studio

  • Class Size: Limited to 12 participants (small group instruction)


What You Will Learn

  • How to roll and shape slabs for even, durable forms

  • Building a sturdy platter base with gently raised edges

  • Joining, compressing, and smoothing seams for a strong, finished piece

  • Adding texture, details, or simple decorative elements to personalize your platter

  • Glaze selection tips for a finish that's beautiful, food-safe, and easy to clean


What You'll Take Home

  • One custom handbuilt serving platter (approximately 10–12 inches, depending on your design)

  • Professionally fired and glazed, food-safe

  • Ready in 4-6 weeks for studio pickup, or we can ship it to you
